CONNAUGHT GARDENS CONNAUGHT BRIDGE SIDMOUTH DEVON.
Currently is a NO TO CONNAUGHT BRIDGE in Sidmouth Devon.
At a recent meeting in June 2008 Sidmouth Milennium Walkway Group Freddy Wedderburn said he would support for town centre pedestrianisation and for a limit to lorry size up PAEK HILL ROAD SIDMOUTH.
A re-design for a bridge that is lower with shorter ramps to meet the five point seven metres bridge height required by Devon County Council.

SIR JOHN BETJEMAN described it as a town caught still in a timeless charm.
Ever since 1819 when the future Queen Victoria was taken to Sidmouth as a baby on holiday tourists have flocked to Sidmouth Devon beach with majestic red cliffs and regency architecture.One wealthy businessman Keith Owen time spent in Sidmouth made such an impression that he decided to leave his money to the EAST DEVON RESORT he said Sidmouth was the perfect picture of England.
JOHN KEITH OWEN was born in Devon but later became a Canadian resident and hoped to retire back to Sidmouth.
John was an investment banker learnt he was suffering from lung cancer with a few weeks to live decided to leave the town his retirement pension fund plus the proceeds from the sale of several properties saying that the picturesque resort of Sidmouth was just how England used to be.
The capital bequeathed to the towns civic society THE SID VALLEY ASSOCIATION cannot be spent but will provide an income of £60000 a year for community projects. Keith from Ottawa discovered he had cancer on his last visit to Sidmouth 2007 where his mother Eileen lived in 1950.
Mr Owen was born in Totnes Devon and became an RAF Pilot until 1976 to start a new life in Canada.
The windfall the largest in the history of the civic society was directed to be spent on plants trees and bulbs to be planted around the town where Sidmouth attracts in excess of 100000 visitors every year.

Branscombe Airfield Devon near Sidmouth Devon Residents living nearby to Branscombe Airfield are concerned after a aircraft crashed soon after take off recently.
East Devon District Council have said that any planning application for the site would have been left with the previous owners of the site when it was sold. It has recently changed ownership.
The Blue Ball Inn at Sidford Devon.

Sidmouth has a maritime history, from a traditional small fishing fleet to notable personalities such as Commander John Carslake who served as a midshipman on Nelson's flagship. "HMS Victory" at the "Battle of Trafalgar"
In the 1800's there were plans for a "Sidmouth Harbour" and work started laying the railway track to transport the building stone to the Harbour location. The building work was abandoned some years later.Now in 2007 proposals have been submitted for The "Port Royal Marina" Sidmouth Devon.

Connaught Walkway Sidmouth Devon
Connaught Gardens Walkway update JULY 2007 Chairman Mr Freddy Wedderburn is hoping the East Devon District Council will partnership the fund the £250,000 project.
Engineers Howicks have revised the design with double ramps to address the concern at the length of sloping access to the bridge which has to be a 1 in 12 ramp.
Trustee Chris Wale is keen to engage the public in the design of this Walkway.

WALKWAY TO THE CONNAUGHT GARDENS.
Sidmouth's Jewel of the Jurassic Coast.
The Connaught Gardens named after the DUKE OF CONNAUGHT were constructed over seventy years ago and have been under the control of the local council since this period.
The gardens contain a fine range of herbaceous plants which thrive in the temperature climate.The gardens are aslo used for a wide range of cultural activities including music,drama and art,where the bandstand set in green lawn provides a superb enviroment with the nearby Clock Tower Cafe for refreshments.
On the south west edge of the gardens is a cliff overlooking the sea with fine views of the Jurassic Coast and to the west over Torbay and beyond.
Unfortunately,access to the gardens from the Sidmouth town and from Manor Road Car Park neccessitates climbing up hazardous steps and negotiating a busy road.The aim of the walkway is the improve this access safely for the young and old.
Using a small Lottery Grant,the Walkway Group has comissioned consultants to carry out a design study with the co-operation of EAST DEVON DISTRICT COUNCIL and SIDMOUTH TOWN COUNCIL.
We now have to find the necessary finance to pay for the work.

Toastrack the 1927 Austin 20 known locally as TOASTRACK is back in Town.
The Bus last saw active service in the 1950s as one of a pair running routes around Sidmouth Town Centre Salcombe Hill Sidmouth and Peak Hill Sidmouth Devon.The Bus has been restored by Tim Wellock of CHARD SOMERSET and colleage TIM MILLER whom played a big part in this major restoration project.
Some parts of TOASTRACK are thought to be from before the First World War.
